Wimbledon 2019 Women's Predictions for the 4th Round (Round of 16)

Most of these match-ups can be broken into two components: Expected and Surprise.

Ten out of the 16 players were seeded, with 6 of them in the Top 16.

First Quarter - The Anticipated
Ashleigh Barty vs. Alison Riske
Expected: Barty especially since Garbine Muguruza lost in the first round.
Surprise: Riske took the spot we picked for Belinda Bencic - a nice upset for a total of three quality wins.
Prediction: Barty

Serena Williams vs. Carla Suarez Navarro
Expected: Serena even though she faced a quality opponent in Julia Goerges in the third round.
Surprise: Suarez Navarro likely benefited from upsets to Maria Shaparova and Angelique Kerber but she solidly beat the players put in front of her. She has not dropped a set.
Prediction: Serena

Second Quarter - The Toss-Up Quarter
Barbora Strycova vs. Elise Mertens
Expected: Mertens had a favorable draw and performed as expected in the third round against Wang Qiang who could have been her lone chance to stumble.
Surprise: Strycova has flown under the radar this year but has played some great tennis in this tournament, knocking off two seeded players, including Kiki Bertens's spot in this bracket.
Prediction: Mertens

Johanna Konta vs. Petra Kvitova
Expected: Kvitova has not dropped a set. Now the fun begins for her.
Toss-Up: Konta is not a surprise because it would have been her or Sloane in this spot.
Prediction: Kvitova

Third Quarter -- The Forgotten Quarter
Elina Svitonlina vs. Petra Martic
Expected: Svitolina, taken for granted mainly because she had a great start to the season and got injured.
Surprise: Martic flies under the radar and has had some quality wins this tournament.
Prediction: Svitolina

Karolina Muchova vs. Karolina Pliskova
Expected: Pliskova is expected to make it to the semifinals.
Surprise: Muchkova has put together three quality wins.
Prediction: Pliskova

Fourth Quarter - The Surprise Quarter
Simona Halep vs. Cori Gauff
Expected: Halep did not stumble in the last round to Victoria Azarenka, not that we really expected it.
Surprise: Coco Gauff has been the major surprise in the entire tournament. Of three players I picked to face Halep, her name did not come up. Now the question is whether I will pick the upset.
Prediction: Halep

The Surprise-Suprise portion of the bracket
Zhang Shai vs Dayana Yastremska
Surprise: Zhang is likely back on her game after some injuries. She's stunned a few including Caroline Wozniacki in the third round.
Surprise: Yastremska should not be a huge surprise, except that this part of the bracket fell apart early when Naomi Osaka lost in the first round. To Yastremska's credit, she beat three solid opponents including Sofia Kenin.
Prediction: Yastremska
